General Information

Although the NVQ is broken down into separate units, it is accepted that the work of the steward is not, therefore units are assessed together - in an holistic manner.

Candidates are required to complete a structured portfolio, covering each of the units of the qualification and this is used as evidence of competency.

Average time from start to finish of this NVQ is about 5 months. The following is an indication of how the programme might work:

  • Month 1 Register and induction (1 day) Training session #1 (average 4hrs)
  • Month 2 Workplace observation #1 (during a working day of the steward) Training session #2 (average 4hrs)
  • Month 3 Training session #3 (average 4hrs)
  • Month 4 Workplace observation #2 (during a working day of the steward)
  • Month 5 Completion session - signing off candidate portfolio

*Funding is currently available for eligible candidates in many parts of the UK for this qualification.

Assessment

Assessment of this award is through observation, by an assessor, of the steward carrying out their duties in their own workplace and through the evidence collected in the candidate's portfolio.
